Advice On Stocks And Shares
Shares, sometimes known as equities or stocks, are a financial share in a publicly listed company that can increase or decrease in value depending on the perceived and intrinsic value of the company on the stock market. Share value can be determined by the market capitalization of the company in question, but may also be affected by market and industry trends, proposed developments or new enterprises, corporate take-overs, environmental factors and even the time of year.
Reasons For Buying
Private individuals and organisations choose to invest in shares for many reasons. Generally investments are made as a way of supplementing an individual's regular income, though professional investors may choose to rely solely on their share portfolios for income. The aim with any share investment is to buy the shares at the lowest possible price and sell them at the highest, thereby maximising the profit made.
Shares often come with the additional bonus of paying out dividends, portions of the company's annual profits, to shareholders depending on the stake they have in the company. Large investment firms, wealthy individuals and even corporations may choose to invest in companies for other reasons however - perhaps to take-over the company, to eliminate it as corporate competition, or to perform a merger.
Research And Advice
Buying and selling shares can be quite a complicated process and is one that should not be undertaken without a significant amount of research and planning. Enlisting the services of a stockbroker, for instance, is not only advisable but in almost all circumstances compulsory for undertaking a share transaction. Knowing when to sell your shares in order to maximize profits and limit losses is another factor of investment that can be confusing, and is a decision that must be made with caution.
Ultimately investors are accountable for their portfolios and their profits and losses, and it is for this reason that investing in the stock market should be undertaken with care and consideration, and professional advice sought wherever possible.
This Site
The purpose of this site is to provide information on the many different factors that need to be considered when buying and selling stocks and shares. As well as the basic principles of share ownership (including types of shares available, voting rights and dividends) it will also consider the different elements of researching which shares to buy (including key indicators to watch and judgements on when to buy) as well as the mechanics of share dealing (involving an explanation of stock markets and the steps involved in buying and selling stocks and shares). It should be remembered at all times, though, that share dealing is risky: investments can both decrease and increase in value, and professional advice should be obtained before either buying or selling.
